Know the Law

what you need to know
Buckling up is the single most important action you can take to stay safe in a vehicle.
Whether it’s a car seat, booster seat, or seat belt, using the right restraint is the most effective way to save lives and reduce injuries in car crashes. Essential resources are available to help you understand the importance of occupant protection, including crash statistics, common seat belt myths, and answers to frequently asked questions.
adult occupants
Seat belts are essential for safety, but they only work when used correctly.
Learn how to ensure your seat belt fits properly and how to use your vehicle’s safety features to protect yourself in a crash. This includes understanding how airbags work with seat belts, and for pregnant individuals, ensuring proper seat belt positioning to protect both the parent and baby.

Infants & Children:
Protecting young passengers involves selecting the right car seat or booster seat at every stage of their growth.
As children grow, they will transition from a car seat to a booster seat and eventually to using a seat belt. Proper harnessing is crucial for children who still require a car seat, and as they get older, it’s essential to ensure the seat belt fits properly. As they move through these stages, it’s important that they are always restrained correctly for maximum safety. Keeping children securely fastened in the appropriate restraint system until they are ready for an adult seat belt is key to their safety on the road.
Caregivers
Whether you’re a parent, grandparent, childcare provider, or foster parent, making sure children are securely fastened in the proper restraint system is vital to their safety.
In Minnesota, licensed childcare and foster care providers are required to complete a child passenger safety training program, with the upcoming B.E.S.T. Program offering a comprehensive, hybrid approach. Find out how to get started and ensure you meet state requirements.
